To me, those lyrics could definately be interpreted as someone who has just given up hope and just decided to "take the long way home". Just a different take on the song. I just became re-acquainted with the writing of John Updike .
We think we need to famous, first verse about Romeo, . The second verse, joke of the neighborhood, is about not knowing who you are or pretending to be someone else, disregarding your own feelings. The third verse, but there are times, is about almost realizing that we do not live our life in the right way. We don’t give ourselves enough credit and self love. @TheLongWayHome sometimes the intent of songs is lost when other people try to interpret what the artist was trying to say. Refreshing to hear what Roger Hodgeson was actually thinking about while penning this song.

General CommentIt is really a great sad song of life. To understand this song just substitude Long with Wrong. Take the long way home is realy take the wrong way home. He married the wrong woman when everyone is telling him he is joke because she is just using him. As he grows he realized she does not love him anymore so he takes a trip to the city lights to get away. He sees himself stuck and can't change things.
Outside of that arena he has to deal with the realities of home life and his harshest critics. Too long being in one place doing the same thing for years makes one wonder if you could have been someone other than yourself - a much better you. This implies that our hero avoids getting home because when he's on the road he has a few more moments of being alone with his dreams, and in his dreams he's a superstar. General CommentWhy has no one commented on this song? Aren't there any Bloodhound fans out there?

He wants to go back to the days he had fun with her and how she adored him and made love to him. Home is what the wife make for you. The moral of the story here is if you are shallow in seeking love and physical satisfaction, don't blame anyone but yourself. Life and love are very deep and it is important to have depth in a realationship.
I think those final few lines paint a happy ending - makes it feel to me like a second chance or second wind. The subject has run off to do what they want to, they're "not around" for the same ol' stuff because they took the long way, thought about it, and made a decision. The song was track one of side two of the group's 1979 album, 'Breakfast in America', it peaked at #1 on May 13th, 1979 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart. I guess Barry Gibb disagreed, since he wrote a song for Dionne Warwick three years later called "Take the Short Way Home." Alternative rock band Lazlo Bane covered the song for their 2007 cover album Guilty Pleasures. Maybe i'm taking the lyrics to literally - but that's my take. In the end, when he's ready to settle down, no one's going to be there because he never really adapted to marrried life.
Not having any real answers to his problem he gets to enjoy their moment together - in the now. Making the day go on longer, by taking the long way home. To grow, they have to realize there is more to life than just work. Although marvelously well written the lyrics of this song is somewhat depressing and it's a step away for an ordinary middle aged dude to commit suicide.
The oohs and the aahs at the end are the best part. Supertramp really knows how to create a mood. They have since divorced after she left him. In our hearts and in love we can find home at any time.

I always saw the song a little ambiguous. I see 'home' as being internal and external. Definitely part of the song is about the shallowness of success and getting caught up in a world and success and chasing, being popular, or whatever, is taking 'the long way home'. Because I think 'home' in its deepest sense is inside, is being at peace with oneself.

The movie starred Michael O'Keefe ("Caddyshack") and Lou Gossett Jr. I don't know why this song has always struck me as being about suicide for some reason. In essence, it's about the ups and downs of coming of age, and ultimately growing up with some of the successes and failures we each make.
Again it's ambiguous - 'if you're not around' means… you're dead or you couldn't settle down - you couldn't take it and you're off looking for things that are more important. I remember having a lot of fun writing it but never really having a clear picture of it. It was more… often when I write songs, I go by gut instinct. I had always imagine this song as being two guys friends whom decided to get away from home to do some activity together. The narrative of the song would by his friend who knows him well, tries to console him, as best as a guy could.
Nowadays, we have the Supertramp camp saying Roger is stealing Supertramp songs for his use on tour. Roger wrote his songs and Rick Davies wrote his songs - it would be nice if the side could come to a reconciliation but it doesn't look promising. Anyway, enjoy the songs, they are amazing works of art.
